Images and commissions for commercial use
It is important to understand the difference between photography for the average consumer and commercial photography. Photography such as some of my equestrian work provides a product to the customer in the form of prints or images on a CD.
Photography for commercial publication provides a service as opposed to a product. This means that the client, who uses an image in his or her brochure, advertisement or catalogue, are paying for permission to reproduce that image or images in their proposed publication. The photographer retains the copyright (ownership) of the image at all times and is, the client needs to purchase specific rights the photos, according to how they plan to use them.
The additional costs involved in commercial photography include :
Pre-production which can include the time necessary for planning, meetings, set-up time, arranging and organising equipment and/or people.
Post-production might include image selection for particular uses or advanced use of Photoshop editing software for specific commercial requirements.
